Linking Kapatid – Big Brothers Helping Small Entrepreneurs

November 21st, 2016

The concept behind Go Negosyo and Department of Trade and Industry’s Kapatid, Angat Lahat program is to link small entrepreneurs to big brother companies for the prosperity for all.

Just recently, in the National MSME Summit 2016 held in Davao, we had a town hall session with the Micro and Small entrepreneurs and big brother entrepreneurs such as Tessie Sy Coson (SM Investments); Feliciano Torres (Yazaki Torres); Manny Osmena (Manny O Group); Tennyson Chen (Bounty Fresh); William Belo (Wilcon Depot); Alice Eduardo (Sta. Elena Corporation); Rosalind Wee (W Group); Glenn Yu (Seaoil); George Barcelon (PCCI); Santi Araneta (LBC); and Sammy Uy (DIMDI).

We were also joined by Sen. Miguel Zubiri, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Labor Secretary Bebot Bello, Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol, and Cong. Joey Salceda.

Kris Aquino, who is an advocate of Go Negosyo and MSME development, moderated the engagement among micro and large entrepreneurs. She prepared well for the program, and even studied the profiles of the micro entrepreneurs and how they can be linked to the other entrepreneurs on stage.

Through this engagement, we were able to help the micro entrepreneurs get support and help from the big brothers.

Let me share some of the highlights from the town hall session.

One of the small entrepreneurs linked was Rudolf “Jun” N. Mariano. Jun was connected with Manny O Wines’ Manny Osmeña because they are both in the beverage industry. Jun said he’s happy that Osmeña has committed to helping Mariano’s kalamansi juice product through distribution. The latest news he shared was that Osmeña has a new project in BGC where he intends to have the kalamansi product served. He is also excited because of their recent approval from FDA meaning distribution of their products could grow. Lastly, he said that Kris’ endorsement of his product during the program really boosted interest and the sales of his product.

Another microentrepreneur was Emelyn Bragat who shares that after the Town Hall, a big benefit to her business was the boost in exposure. She said that it was truly helpful in giving credibility to her business and generated more interest in her product. She believes the program was able to distinguish her business from other pastillas vendors because people found out that they exported to other countries and were DTI-approved. Also, after Kris introduced her to LBC owner Santi Araneta, people from his company talked her about special packages she can avail for future shipments of her product.

Meanwhile, Connie P. Sendrijas, the Warden for BJMP Gensan Women’s Dorm, says that the exposure and dialogue that occurred in the Town Hall was a big help for the BJMP Inmates Crafts business. She said that it boosted interest in their upcoming participation in the DTI Trade Fair and more importantly, the morale of the inmates. They are now more motivated to learn and work and are hopeful for their future after release. She shared that Sen. Migz Zuburi’s statements on putting forth policy that will remove the stigma against the employability of ex-inmates gave the women hope that life after jail won’t be filled with rejection. Sen. Migz also suggested to incentivize the entrepreneurs who will employ ex-convict inmates who have undergone rehabilitation program.
