This is the first major summit of Go Negosyo for 2012. For seven years, Go Negosyo has been at the forefront of promoting the entrepreneurial mindset. It has been four years since the first Women Summit, yet it still continues to uplift spirits and inspire Filipinos!

Watch out for the regional Young Entrepreneurship Summits and the DTI-Go Negosyo caravans and Negosyo sa Barangay!

Four years of empowering women

March 12th, 2012

Go Negosyo will be celebrating its seventh anniversary this June, and we have been hosting the Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo for four years now. Even on its fourth year, the Women Entrep Summit still is the most attended Go Negosyo event, with thousands staying the whole day to listen to our featured women speakers and entrepreneurs.

Highlights of the event included an empowering speech from keynote speaker Mel Tiangco, one of the most respected news anchors of GMA7; and business and marketing lessons from Dr. Vicki Belo, who shared her company Belo Medical Group’s strategies to becoming one of the country’s most known and esteemed brands. Former Governor Grace Padaca proved that a handicap is not an impediment to rising to the top, while Myrna Padilla proved that, from her own experience, an OFW domestic worker can become the CEO of her own company. We were also very privileged to have Maria Mercedes Corrales, former regional president of Starbucks Asia-Pacific, to show and share how a Filipina can perform an international CEO function in one of the most known global companies.

Angelpreneur Joy Abaquin lectured on how to harness a woman’s innate maternal qualities in a plenary session entitled “Nurturing Children’s Strengths,” while our other Angelpreneurs Mylene Abiva, Carlo Calimon, Paulo Tibig, Reuel Virtucio and Butz Bartolome, as well as the Women’s Business Council of the Philippines and Association of Image Consultants International Philippines, spent the day at our mentoring booths, giving free mentorship sessions to participants.

The forums resulted in a dynamic and insightful session featuring panelists Cynthia Villar, Pinky Poe, Honey Sumndad-Usman, and the Women Starpreneurs in the morning forum; while celebrity entrepreneurs Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, Vina Morales, Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, Fanny Serrano, Miriam Quiambao and Regine Tolentino spoke in the afternoon forum, stressing the importance of time management in shuffling between their businesses and showbiz careers.

Cynthia Villar also sponsored also seminar rooms, providing lectures from real entrepreneurs or business owners on a range of topics: from online selling, to health and beauty, to self-defense.

Our summits have always been both educational and entertaining. GMA7 provided various talents who excited the crowd in between lectures and talks. Go Negosyo entrepreneur and MVP Bossing Vina Morales even provided several song numbers apart from participating in the afternoon forum.

We hope that the participants picked up insights and pointers that they can apply to succeed in life, especially since the summit hosted a large gathering of the country’s top women and entrepreneurs. Apart from our speakers, we’ve also recognized a new batch of Women Starpreneurs, whom we’ve featured in the Philippine Star the past week. Their stories prove that Filipinos can achieve anything, no matter where you come from. As I’ve said to the participants at the summit, Filipinos are not destined for poverty, but success is for those who want it the most.

Wonder Women

March 8th, 2012

This June, it will be seven years since the Go Negosyo advocacy started. For four years now, we have been holding the Women Entrepreneurship Summit, and without fail, it always has the highest attendance among our summits, caravans and various events. I love working with women since they are so committed. There are so many of them, and you must have seen some of the most successful women in our ads and press releases over the past weeks.

It was my first time to meet Sara Soliven de Guzman, who represented Philippine Star as a major sponsor for the Women STARpreneurs. Sara is the daughter of Max Soliven, and a columnist of Star and an entrepreneur herself. Rosalind Wee, a Go Negosyo trustee and very successful entrepreneur, who will also be featured in our TV show this Saturday, helped in the selection of Women STARpreneurs and stayed practically the whole day helping out. She and Echostore founder Chit Juan were the judges for this year’s STARpreneurs. Read the rest of this entry »

Teaching Kids About Money: 2nd Kiddo-preneur Bazaar set on April 14

March 6th, 2012

Print

Kids are in school for years and years learning about english, math, and science from a battalion of teachers. But when it comes down to teaching kids about money, their own parents are pretty much all they’ve got… until they start learning about this on their own though trial and error. What’s positive about this is that the sooner they start trying, the sooner they start making their mistakes; and the more equipped they’ll be as adults to face the greater challenges that come with financial freedom.

To this end, business journalist Maiki Oreta and her 6-year old daughter Brielle launched The Kiddo-preneur Bazaar – an exercise in entrepreneurship for young minds. It is the first of it’s kind, where kids can be entrepreneurs even for just a day.

The idea in its infancy
The idea for this project came late last year, when Brielle was learning about the peso denominations in school. While helping with her homework, Maiki realized that her daughter knew that money was important and that she needed it to buy her “so called essentials” such as ice cream and toys, but beyond that she wasn’t interested in the lesson or about money in general. Together, they decided that what was really needed is practical experience which comes with starting one’s own business.

Initially, the plan was to do something quick, temporary, and easy to execute such as a little lemonade stand. Soon, things took a shape of their own and eventually the business idea mushroomed into something much bigger. Since there wasn’t a venue for this type of business, they set up a place not only for her but also for all the other kids out there that want to try their hand at entrepreneurship early on.

The Kiddo-preneur Bazaar #1
The first Kiddo-preneur bazaar took place last December 4th at The Rockwell Club in Makati. The turnout was astounding and the bazaar was jam-packed from start to finish, loaded with hundreds of kid entrepreneurs, their families, and their friends. Kids from different age groups set up and decorated their booths, talked to customers, distribed change, and ultimately earned their own money!

One group of little boys in particular stood out. Their booth, “Cookies for a Cause” earned a cool P102,000.00 in sales that day! They sold boxes of cookies worth P100.00 each for just about 5 hours. Customers just couldn’t resist their charms and the good nature of their business as their proceeds went straight to their chosen charity, CRIBS.

The kid entrepreneurs were so thrilled, so eager, so dedicated and by the end of the day, extremely tired. Yet it taught them the value of hard work and a sense of appreciation for what their parents do, plus the fact that money doesn’t grow on trees!

The Kiddo-preneur Bazaar #2
Given the success of our first bazaar, we’re having another one this summer. The next Kiddo-preneur Bazaar will be on Saturday, April 14th at the event hall of the Aphaland Southgate Mall (EDSA corner Chino Roces Ave.)

If you’d like your child to join please contact kiddopreneur@gmail.com or 0917-580-0216. As an added bonus, the first 35 registered booths will earn one slot each to a Philippine Stock Exchange-sponsored field trip to the Makati bourse on March 30th. Bell ringing simulations, games, prizes, and a cartoon screening on investing await this lucky batch of Kiddo-preneurs!

2012 Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo

February 27th, 2012

Next month is International Women’s Month. And following tradition, this is also just in time for Go Negosyo’s 4th Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo, which is all set to happen on March 2 at the World Trade Center, Metro Manila. The audience can expect an all-women lineup of speakers, mentors, panelists and even entertainers.

We’ve invited some of the speakers and lecturers that Go Negosyo fans avidly follow. For the plenary, we’re bringing in esteemed GMA7 news anchor Mel Tiangco to give a short message of inspiration on how women can be a person for others. Mel Tiangco is not only one of the country’s most respected news anchors, she is also known for her philanthropic activities as the Executive Vice President of the GMA Kapuso Foundation. To talk about beauty, health and wellness in none other than the notable Dr. Vicki Belo, the country’s pioneer and expert in cosmetic surgery. Women’s presence in politics have become more prominent today, and former Isabela governor Grace Padaca tackles the challenges and triumphs in governance, especially for a woman in power. We are also privileged to have the former regional president of Starbucks Asia, Maria Mercedes Corrales, to mentor women on how to be the best woman they can be. Read the rest of this entry »

The Winning Formula

February 23rd, 2012

The women of today have indeed become very driven and ambitious, striving hard for success, whether as an entrepreneur or intrapreneur. And you can see this even just with the lineup of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs who will be mentoring and speaking at the 4th Women Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo on March 2 at the World Trade Center.

As we approach March, which is also International Women’s Month, we’ve asked for the insight of different women who are entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs (or people working for the family business or leading a corporate organization.) The traditional thinking is that the woman should be at home taking care of the children and making sure the home is running well; while the man goes out and works. Many women today are micro and small entrepreneurs because they try to perform both functions as mother and negosyante, having no fixed schedule so that she is able to fulfill her multiple duties. Empowering Women

February 13th, 2012

Valentine’s Day is always a special day for women. I guess women are more enthusiastic about all this romantic stuff. For couples who’ve been married for a long time, just as my wife and I have been married for 28 years, sometimes we tend to take Valentine’s Day for granted, our excuse being Valentine’s Day is everyday with our spouse.

Women play a great role in our life; they are mothers to our children which is important as we men can’t give birth. They bear the pains and difficulty of child birth, and traditionally, the mother stays at home especially in the early years of the child to make sure that love and affection are given. The Matriarchs of Negosyo

February 13th, 2012

More than 90 percent of enterprises are micro enterprises and 70 percent of new businesses are started by women. This just goes to show that women do most of the startup negosyos, and not many make it to becoming medium and large. The challenge for the Go Negosyo community of successful entrepreneurs is to help inspire and to mentor them to be able to grow. This is the reason why we hold our annual Women Entrepreneurship Summit in March, the month that celebrates and honors women.

For this column, the featured four women who have reached the golden age of 80 have continued to share their precious time with Go Negosyo in the past years and still continue to do so in the present. These are the matriarchs behind some of the country’s largest businesses and they’re exemplars of a successful woman, and we believe that they serve as the best inspiration to Filipinas everywhere.
