Book Launch: Go Negosyo’s 50 Inspiring Stories of Young Entrepreneurs

Monday, October 10th, 2011

In the tradition of developing an entrepreneurial mindset among Filipinos, Go Negosyo has once again compiled 50 stories of successful entrepreneurs, this time for those who started young and are already reaping the rewards of their success.

young-entreps-book-cover

Entitled “50 Inspiring Stories of Young Entrepreneurs”, Go Negosyo’s seventh book features negosyantes who are below 40 years old and have made their way to success with hard work, determination, and passion. They have either introduced a new industry, as with the story of Kim Lato who at 23 is one of the pioneers of online selling using a social network site; or have infused national pride and sustainable development in their businesses, like Raymund Punzalan and Jowee Alviar’s Team Manila and Zarah Juan’s Panda Cleaners.

The foreword of the book was written by Edgar “Injap” Sia II, who revolutionized the fastfood industry with Mang Inasal, the most popular barbeque fastfood in the country. Injap’s Mang Inasal is also the main feature of the book, as Go Negosyo unravels the story of his journey and how Mang Inasal came to be.

The book focuses on these entrepreneurs because of their growing presence in negosyo, and at a young age. Go Negosyo recognizes that given the inspiration provided by these success stories, the youth can be at the forefront of promoting change in society by embracing a positive attitude and an entrepreneurial mindset to fight poverty and to build a better nation.

The book launch of Go Negosyo’s 50 Inspiring Stories of Young Entrepreneurs will be on October 20 at 6 in the evening, to be held at the Glorietta 5 Activity Center (in front of National Bookstore). The first 100 to register will get a free copy of the book and a chance to have it signed by the young entrepreneurs at the book launch.

On Parenting and Mentorship

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

As we approached Saint Petersburg in Russia, my wife, Marissa, got the surprise of her life during her birthday party. My children prepared a great video on her, as a tribute to being a great mom and mentor. It was one of our family’s great bonding moments, especially when my father sang The Impossible Dream. My father, like me, is not a singer; but he sang it with all its meaning as sung in Don Quixote, The Man from La Mancha. This has been his theme song, even as far back as the days of Martial Law, being one of those who stood up and fought for democracy.

These times are precious, as our parents reach their senior years. Every moment spent with them is precious. As children, and now parents, we tend to follow the footsteps of our own parents on how they mentored us. (more…)

Great things

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

The world was treated to three great stories this past week: the wedding of the decade, the beatification of Pope John Paul II, and the recent death of Osama Bin Laden.

Of course, how can all the women miss the marriage of the decade, especially my daughters? Since birth, they loved all Disney movies with princes and princesses. Disney has truly marketed the fantasies of monarchy from Kings and Queens. Who can forget Cinderella? (more…)

Being holy

Summer is finally here. This year’s summer is even delayed, as last year’s started early. Last year, February was already hot. Our sales in Carrier air conditioning and Selecta ice cream definitely benefitted from that. With El Nino last year, we also saw hydroelectric power companies having great difficulty in making sure power was continuously supplied, especially in Mindanao.

We could feel the heat already as we move around the country. Two weeks ago, I went to Cebu to give a talk to Avon operators and entrepreneurs (who are expectedly mostly women). We had a very good session with their entrepreneurs as we encouraged them to be more enterprising and to keep the winning attitude. They adopted a theme “Believe to Succeed” which is very much aligned with the mantra that Go Negosyo is sharing around. (more…)

Need we worry?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

With the current crisis in the Middle East and in Japan; and with the prices of commodities and oil going higher; what is in store for SMEs? I asked Romy Bernardo, one of the country’s top economists and a former Finance top official who is also an Independent Director of the RFM Board, about his views and this is what he has to say:

The BSP recently reported that pessimism has substantially increased among Filipino consumers, amidst continued price increases and unrest spreading in the Arab world. The confidence index (CI) weakened from -8.5 percent in Q4 2010 to -23.1 percent in Q1 2011, indicating that the number of pessimists increased during the quarter relative to the number of optimists. Households polled during the 3rd week of March cited continued increase in the prices of petroleum products, the high cost of goods and services, and the rise in household expenses as the reasons behind their weaker outlook. The outlook was aggravated by the tensions in the Middle East and North Africa. (more…)
