Searching for talented teenagers
Do you know a talented student aged 16 to 19 years old, keen on natural sciences, mathematics and technology? Would she or he be interested to participate in an international science camp arranged in Finland in June 2010? If the answer is yes, it is time to send an application to the Millennium Youth Camp.
Nokia is one of the corporate partners of the camp arranged by Technology Academy, the national LUMA centre, the Centre for School Clubs, and the Finnish Ministry of Education. “Nokia thinks it is important that Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) are put into focus at schools and this high level camp is an excellent way for Finland to profile itself as a MST friendly nation”, says Ida Andersson from Nokia Corporate Relations & Responsibility.
During the week there will be lectures, workshops, teamwork, visits to the cooperation organizations and also some leisure. There is no participation fee for 30 selected teenagers who will be invited on the grounds of their applications. Travelling, accommodation and dining will also be on the house.
Higher Learning
The main themes in the camp are Environmental science and technology (climate change, renewable natural resources, renewable energy, water), Applied mathematics, and also Information and communication technology & digitalization. Company and academy partners arrange theme specific programs for the participants and Nokia is responsible for the information & communication technology theme. "The idea is to give participants a possibility to feel the joy of co-creation and experiment with cool technologies", said Marko Mahkonen, Nokia Compatibility and Industry Collaboration.
The target of the camp is to network young people from all over the world together and with Finnish business life and top scientists, and to increase the awareness of the Millennium Technology Prize. The camp takes place the same week when the next Millennium Prize winner will be published. The participants may also take part in the ceremonies and meet the winner and the laureates during that week.
During the camp, the teenagers will familiarize themselves with the Finnish research environment in the natural sciences, and receive information about companies and study opportunities in Finland. The campers will also get to know leading researchers at universities and scientific communities and have various projects with the Finnish corporate sector.
Applications to the camp may be submitted until 30 November 2009. A total of 30 participants will be selected no later than 15 March 2010. For further information and to access the application form, go to www.technologyacademy.fi/millennium-youth-camp-fi.html
