ACADEME, PRIVATE SECTOR & GOVERNMENT COLLABORATE FOR BIGGEST NATIONAL STUDENT ECO CONFERENCE OF THE YEAR

It’s definitely now or never.

Far Eastern University, Parrot’s Beak Social Enterprise and eVentures Management & Marketing Services supported by ABS CBN Foundation, Clean Up Philippines Movement and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to bring a national student conference that aims to encourage the youth to take a more active stand and a more conscious role in helping protect and preserve the environment.

Dubbed as Green Thumb Eco Conference (GTEC) 2012, this one day affair aims to bring together students, practicing environmentalists, policy influencers, private sector stakeholders and the academe in convergence, with the end goal of empowering the youth sector about what they can do to salvage our one planet.

The program is designed in such a way that it will subject the participants to look into themselves as individual earth dwellers and enjoin them on an introspection about their environmental impact and reiterate what one can do for the environment. The cycle will be continued by answering how the students can be stewards of the environment in their respective schools and communities. A platform discussion will be led by Byer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) to Germany and a Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines alumna Nicole Villarojo who would share her experiences as a campus environmentalist primarily as DLSU Student Government President. A forum featuring select student leaders who are recognized for their environmental projects and initiatives will follow suit to basically inspire the student participants about real stories of actions and inspiration — one that they could easily relate to. Among the confirmed panelists are BYEE alumni Reymart Canuel of University of Baguio and Jovi Maurice Yee of Bicol University.

To serve as keynote speaker, prominent educator, policy expert and environment advocate, Dr. Antonio La Viña, the current dean of Ateneo Graduate School of Business, will discuss: The Untold Stories & Lessons Learned from Ondoy, Pepeng and Sendong: The National Environment Landscape and How Should We Move Forward”.

Another known environmental advocate, Ms. Gina Lopez, Managing Director of ABS CBN Foundation, will share her expertise on the topic she is very passionate about: “Pagmimina, Tama Na: Why We Should Say No to Mining in Palawan, and Beyond”. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is also expected to share about its National Greening Program which is declared under Executive Order No. 26 as a government priority.

Another forum is expected to add value to the program and its content as it will feature various individuals who have their own version of stories of being an everyday environmental hero. The panelists who will constitute this forum would come from various sector including business, corporate practice and civic society. As a side event to the conference, Green Expo will also be instituted, featuring environmental non-government organizations, government agencies, and student organizations.

All high schools, colleges and universities are encouraged to send delegates to this worthy, learning-packed, and empowering event. There is a very minimal conference fee worth Five Hundred Pesos (PhP500.00) to cover for the meals and conference kit of the participants.
