Success is for the Passionate

Thursday, November 27th, 2014

Not all great stories of success started with grand beginnings. Most of them started with challenges, problems and dilemmas, and had to go through a long and continuous process of searching for solutions and answers.

Go Negosyo BEST program speakers include Kenneth Cobonpue, Jonathan Yabut, Aurelio Montinola, Sandy Prieto-Romualdez and Johnlu Koa.

Go Negosyo BEST program speakers include Kenneth Cobonpue, Jonathan Yabut, Aurelio Montinola, Sandy Prieto-Romualdez and Johnlu Koa.

Just like the Jonathan Yabut, who I met last week in the Go Negosyo BEST Program. He was proud to share that he came from humble beginnings. He had a desire to have a better life, to prove to others what he can do and to show the potentials of Filipinos in business. This man is a walking passion and grit. Like what he had shared, he knew how to play smart and strategize. He also knew that preparation is the key to success. He wanted it so bad, and now he got it, first by winning the first The Apprentice Asia, followed by other achievements including a published book.

World renowned creative designer Kenneth Cobonpue also inspired the crowd with all his works and how he started with a strong passion for arts and design and merely finding beauty in anything he sees.  His creations have been extraordinary, inspired by ordinary things. His designs are unique, bold but functional,   with a good Filipino touch, a tasteful blend of culture and craftsmanship, using abundant local materials.

Borrowing a line from Jonathan Yabut, “You can never be too small to dream big.” This must be every dreamer’s mantra. The world is big and one must conquer it. But you have to be like them who have put their dreams into action in order to become achievers.

Speaking of achievers, during our CEO Forum in the Go Negosyo BEST Program, we also had successful CEOs with us like Aurelio Montinola, Sandy Romualdez and Johnlu Koa. These inspiring leaders are now serving as very good role models for the youth.

Johnlu, the man behind French Baker, grabbed the opportunity in the 80’s to start French-inspired baked goods. He prepared well for that, as he studied first the art and science of French baking.  He is passionate in his craft and attends to the very detail of the business: from the designs of the store to the napkins to use. In the meantime, Johnlu continues to elevate his business model as he recently opened his artisan-inspired French patisserie called L’artizan.

Aurelio, who colleagues call as Gigi, comes from a family with businesses but he chose a different career path: a path in banking. His training with his father helped him learn the right management skills needed which helped him head the BPI in his 40s. He explored his capabilities as a banker and improved it.  For so many years, he able to transform and grow BPI to where it is now. This achievement of Gigi made him realize that despite the different path he had taken, he was able to be a champion in his career.

Sandy, being in the media industry, has made countless personal sacrifices in order to uphold her and Philippine Daily Inquirer’s values and integrity. These challenges and pressure can easily crush an organization but with Sandy, as what she has said, “I remained grounded and my faith is nurtured.” She knew well that leadership and good values will strengthen and fasten the growth of the organization.

That is how passion works. It fuels an individual to continue to thrive and work for success despite many challenges. I believe that when one is so passionate of his works, he will surely be recognized for it. And that is not just the end of it; he will also experience the joy and happiness of working. That is what I see in my father and Wash Sycip, who joined us in the Passion book launch. Both of them are passionate from their younger years and until now people can see their desire to continue with their passion to build more empowered Filipinos.

From all these great speakers, I can only conclude that, “Success is for those who wanted it the most.” I have mentioned this countless times in the past and will continue to remind this to everyone. Do whatever it takes to reach your goals.

Go Negosyo Launches the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow (BEST) Programme

Thursday, November 20th, 2014

True to its commitment of helping transform the Philippines into an entrepreneurial nation, the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, Inc. also known as Go Negosyo launched the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow (BEST) Programme last November 17 at the Manila Polo Club, Makati City as one of the highlights of the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2014 Philippine Celebration.

Go Negosyo is taking youth mentorship to the next level through the Go Negosyo BEST. It is a mentoring program that aims to be an avenue for academically outstanding college junior and senior students (who may not necessarily be business majors or business-inclined) to expose them to thought leaders and industry practitioners through a one-year program, with quarterly activities that may include but may not be limited to meet-and-greet with heads of corporations, company tours and immersions and teambuilding and personal enrichment sessions.

The launch conference was attended by around 400 students coming from 50 schools all over the region. The student delegates were selected based on their academic standing and leadership involvements.

Highlights of the seven-hour programme included lightning talks and power forums:

Voices, the official chorale group of the Assumption College- San Lorenzo rendered their soulful version of You Raised Me Up and performed the National Anthem.

Go Negosyo is a Storyteller

Thursday, November 20th, 2014

“Go Negosyo is a storyteller. And we will continue to tell stories that will inspire more and more Filipinos to entrepreneurship.”

These were my exact words last Monday when we launched the 9th publication of Go Negosyo entitled Go Negosyo: 50 Entrepreneurs of Passion. After months of preparation, we were able to successfully launch this wonderful book that will empower people to start their own journey of success.

More than 500 entrepreneurs and advocacy partners joined us as we unveil our 9th book. It was also the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2014. British Embassy Ambassador Asif Ahmad, who also joined our morning program and delivered his speech in Tagalog, also welcomed the guests that night and officially opened the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW).   He was joined by Deputy Head of Mission Trevor Lewis and their guests from the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines and Philippine British Business Club.

I remember him saying: “Entrepreneurs are the driving force of growth in the country.” That is true. That is why these activities included in the GEW are to harness and strengthen the entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs to embark on their own journey.

I have told everyone that night that we are publishing these books as this is also our way to share the advocacy that we have been promoting for the past nine years.

We had a wonderful sharing during the night as our three hosts table-hopped and interviewed the featured entrepreneurs in the book like Jose Antonio, Bernie Liu, Esther Vibal, Rey Lapid, Rikki Dee and many others. More than 40 entrepreneurs joined the discussion. It’s not the usual fora and talks we conduct every time we gather but it was more participative, informative and personal session as the entrepreneurs talked about their passion from their hearts.

All the entrepreneurs who were featured in the book are not simply working to earn, instead they are there because they pursued their passion, despite countless challenges and trials, and have now reached their success in life. I am happy with the launch as it was more intimate; with close friends and partners in the advocacy.  Even Washington Sycip of SGV & Co., who is now in his 90s, managed to join us and meet fellow-entrepreneurs.  I am sure he has inspired the young entrepreneurs in the audience just with his presence.

In the morning, we gathered more than 500 top students from various universities for the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow. These are the future leaders in our society and we aim to inspire and teach them further and that we can also help them in making a difference to other people’s lives.

Go Negosyo launches the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow (BEST) program last November 17, 2014. Go Negosyo welcomed its pilot batch of more than 500 BEST Students.

Go Negosyo launches the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow (BEST) program last November 17, 2014. Go Negosyo welcomed its pilot batch of more than 500 BEST Students.

We are sure they were inspired with the journey and creations of Kenneth Cobonpue.  Kenneth told them that his designs are of different forms, because “Form gives emotions.” Just like how he wowed the Cebu crowd during our Creativity and Innovation Summit, the students cannot help but be in awe during his presentation. I see his creativity even in his presentations.

Jonathan Yabut, the first winner of The Apprentice Asia also gave a very inspiring talk on his journey towards success at a young age, beating all challenges in life. His drive and determination coupled with his strategies and techniques helped him succeed in The Apprentice. And that is what we have always wanted our listeners to understand. That they have to have the positive mindset and the knowhow of things in order to surpass and achieve goals.

Our CEO forum with Aurelio Montinola, Sandy Prieto-Romualdez and Johnlu Koa was packed with insightful ideas from these great minds. Then our young enterprising and entrepreneurial Filipinos forum was also inspiring. Young billionaire Joseph Calata advised the students “Do not lose your drive.” Many successful entrepreneurs keep going because of that drive; their will to go on and progress. And that is what keeps them energized in the morning.

There are more stories to share and more and more people to empower. That is why we will keep on doing all these kinds of activities in order to fulfil our mission.

Of Passion in Business and Marriage

Thursday, November 13th, 2014

Finally, after months of detailed preparation, we have come close to the celebration of the Global Entrepreneurship Week which is going to be from November 17 to 23. Next week is going to be one busy yet empowering week because it will be filled with activities to celebrate the growth and success of entrepreneurship in the country.

On Monday, we are formally launching our latest program, Go Negosyo BEST (Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow), dedicated to the top selected students from different colleges and universities who have shown their eagerness to become instruments of change by being outstanding and exemplary. I am sure that all of them will be equipped with more inspiration and knowhow on how to succeed in life and possibly in the field of entrepreneurship. They need not become entrepreneurs. What we want them to gain in this experience are the right values and character, the relevant competencies: to become enterprising and entrepreneurial. We know that these characteristics can also help them in their future endeavours as change makers of this society. The students will get to see and understand how successful individuals achieved their positions today. These role models will become the inspirations and examples for these students to follow.

We are glad to have for our whole day program on Monday Amb. Asif Ahmad, Senator Sonny Angara,  Anthony Pangilinan, Kenneth Cobonpue, Jonathan Yabut, Aurelio Montinola, Sandy Prieto, Dylan Wilk , Johnlu Koa, Rajo Laurel, Joseph Calata, Bro. Mike Lobrin, RJ David, Clang Garcia, Luis Gabriel Moreno, Ronald Pineda, and Mikhael Red as speakers in this premiere of Go Negosyo BEST. We have prepared a full-packed program for the students and we cannot wait to welcome them.

Aside from the opening of Go Negosyo BEST, we are also officially launching the Global Entrepreneurship Week on Monday in a private dinner with the Go Negosyo advocates.

Yesterday, I met with British Amb. Ahmad and Deputy Head of Mission, Trevor Lewis to seal our partnership for this year’s run of the Global Entrepreneurship Week in the Philippines.   We are both thankful to have this joint opportunity to raise the level of awareness on entrepreneurship and the importance of being enterprising to move up in life.  We mentioned in our previous columns the other activities such as the PLDT SME Nation Bossing search and Awards, the Southeast Asia Mobile App Challenge, The OFW and Families Negosyo Summit (with the Villar foundation), and a couple of other activities. Again, these will harness and strengthen the entrepreneurship revolution in the Philippines today.

Another big part of the Monday activities is the launch of the 9th Go Negosyo book in the evening. This is very dear to me as this is as special as our first book. I cannot wait to share with you all their very encouraging stories. Last Monday, I released an article regarding this book. I have released the first 25 passionate and successful entrepreneurs. I will now release the next 25 entrepreneurs on Monday to complete the list of featured entrepreneurs.

Sen. Bam Aquino, one of the most active advocates of entrepreneurship in the country, is also joining us. He will be joined by DTI Secretary Greg Domingo, and both will share their views on the progress of the implementation of the new Go Negosyo Act and the setting-up of Negosyo Centers in all cities and municipalities.  Over 400 entrepreneurs, advocates and enablers shall be joining us that evening and we are fortunate to have with  us for a very interesting forum, PLDT Chairman Manny MVP Pangilinan, Washington Sycip, Andrew Gotianun, Andrew Tan, who are all featured as well in the book we are launching. MVP wrote the foreword of that new book.

I am now inviting everyone to be part of the Global Entrepreneurship week. You can check the activities in our website, www.gonegosyo.net or www.ph.gew.co.

From the story of passion for business and success, comes the passion in life and marriage.

Rikki Dee celebrated his birthday with wife, Beng.

Rikki Dee celebrated his birthday with wife, Beng.

Congratulations to our good friend, Rikki Dee who celebrated his birthday last Saturday. Rikki is a serial entrepreneur and has been so passionate in the restaurant business from the very first day he started. He is a supporter of Go Negosyo as he wants to share and inspire others to pursue their dreams and that they too can make it in life. He is one of the 50 featured entrepreneurs in Go Negosyo book on passion which will be unveiled on Monday. He is lucky to have a wife like Beng who is an important factor in his success. As I always say, our partners in life complete our success. They have been married for 31 years and they are relishing on the joy that their only grandson gives them.  As you can see in the photo, Rikki and Beng not only show the passion they have in business but in their marriage as well.

Passion to Succeed

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

In the many years of Go Negosyo, we have shared with you countless inspiring tales of entrepreneurial journey of our partners in the advocacy. They revealed to us their dreams, the paths taken, the challenges they faced, and the triumphs over adversities. Real entrepreneurs have their vision, their aspirations and determination, and the common thread we see is their relentless passion on what they do: passion on their big idea, passion to make a difference, and inherently, a passion to succeed!

Passion has ignited many to generate creative and innovative ideas to start their business ventures, and with passion comes the determination to pursue those ideas.  I can say that the value of passion is more than just the character of one individual. It is a personal perspective, outlook or drive. It comes from within. It is the energy to pursue the goals and ambition despite the hardships and criticisms that one may face. And that is what makes dreams come alive.

The success of an entrepreneur does not depend only on the amount of money that he is earning. The real meaning of success is the achievement of their goals and purpose they have set.   I remember Steve Jobs from Apple who said that, “People with passion can change the world for the better.”  And that is what we in Go Negosyo and the many partners of our advocacy believe in.

We want people to pursue their passion and purpose in life!

PHOTO 1 Passion Book Cover

In line with this belief, we are happy to announce that we are once again releasing an empowering book to inspire the readers with stories of successful entrepreneurs who pursued their passion, with hard work and determination. They have a positive mindset. They built on their competencies and studied their market well.

That is the 9th book of Go Negosyo which is very timely for our 9th year anniversary.

The 50 Entrepreneurs of Passion is as special as our first book launched in the first year of Go Negosyo. Why? Because this features successful and champion entrepreneurs who have undying commitment to fulfill their goals and mission in their businesses.

We are releasing this book with the hope to encourage our fellow Filipinos, from different social status, to take the path to success.

This passion book, as we call it, will open the stories of the entrepreneurs who were once challenged, who faced frustrations and disappointments, but never gave up.

I want to share with you their stories in this column but you all have to wait for its official release. We will be unveiling this 9th book in a private dinner on November 17, which will also coincide with the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Week. This will be a gathering of those who were featured in the book including inspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders like Andrew Tan, Andrew Gotianun, Ricardo Po, Jose Magsaysay, and many other champion entrepreneurs.  Leading entrepreneurship advocate and PLDT Group Chairman Manny Pangilinan will also join us as he was the one who wrote the uplifting foreword of the book. A forum about passion will be the highlight of the evening.

In the morning of November 17, we are launching the Go Negosyo Building Enterprising Students for Tomorrow (Go Negosyo BEST) program which is a one-year mentorship program for the country’s brightest students.  We are expecting about one thousand representatives from various colleges and universities. British Ambassador Asif Ahmad and I will welcome the participants. Our program partner is The Master Lighthouse Foundation, headed by long-time Go Negosyo advocate Anthony Pangilinan. I will join Manny, Sandy Prieto and Aurelio Montinola in the morning forum. We will also be joined by Dylan Wilk of Human Heart Nature and Jonathan Yabut, winner of The Apprentice Asia 2014. Rajo Laurel, one of the entrepreneurs featured in the Passion book will give an inspiring talk about his Passion for Fashion. A forum of young Filipino Entrepreneurs will give us a background on how Joseph Calata, RJ David, Luis Gabriel Moreno, Ronald Pineda and Mikhail Red became enterprising and entrepreneurial in their chosen paths.

It will be a whole-day activity filled with inspiration and learnings that will surely reignite everyone’s Passion to Succeed!
