The Real Secret to Success

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Last week, we paid tribute to our fathers in honor of their special day.  Their inspiration and mentorship led us to our success as entrepreneurs.  This time, I would like to pay tribute to our spouses.

My wife, Marissa, and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary.  Time does fly so fast.  It is hard to believe that we have been married this long, with five children. Our eldest is 25 years old and our youngest just turned six. Isabella, our youngest, was a surprise to us.  Marissa was 46 years old when she gave birth to her.  We went to the doctor because she was experiencing some unusual pain.  The hospital did a series of tests.  Luckily, no tests with radiation were done.  Our family doctor then advised to get the basic pregnancy test kit, just in case. I remember the day when my wife saw the result from the kit.  She tossed it to me because her first reaction was shock.  She was scared, but happy at the same time.  Both of us have been blessed to have a late addition to our family.  Isabella kept us young, as she is quite a handful.

The Growing Go Negosyo Community

Monday, June 24th, 2013

As we continue our journey in the entrepreneurship advocacy for the last eight years, we are fortunate to see also the growing number of advocates, entrepreneurs, corporate partners and enablers who are one with our vision to help create an entrepreneurial culture, a country of enterprising Filipinos.  Our partners help inspire and empower, teach and mentor other aspiring entrepreneurs, and even the youth who simply want to move up life.  Truly, it is always an exciting and rewarding experience to be involved in this advocacy and to touch the lives of fellow Filipinos even in the countryside.

A Father’s Advice

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

Last Sunday was Father’s Day. To me, it was still a good day to remember our fathers. If they are still with us, enjoy the blessing that they are still with us and if they have moved on to the next life, remember the best times you spent with them, the memories of childhood days and the advise they imparted to you. Every year, I am glad that I am able to spend time with my dad somewhere that gives us quality time as a clan away from work.

Sometimes, the quest for power and material wealth can push us to a point that we do not devote time with our parents and family. Then we realize that when they are gone, we should have done more.

Last Father’s Day, I asked fellow entrepreneurs in the Go Negosyo community how their fathers influenced their life. First, let me just thank my dad Joecon for giving me the best gift that influenced me that life is not for us to live alone but to share our blessings with others through advocacies that help people have a better life. His own cause of lighting the candle of hope through Namfrel has influenced me to start lighting that same candle of helping small entrepreneurs fight poverty through Go Negosyo. Thank you, Dad. Real Independence

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

We celebrated yesterday our country’s 115th Independence Day.  Our country is no longer a young democracy. In a way, we have reached a certain level of political maturity, having gone through less controversial election processes, with sincere electoral reforms and stricter COMELEC rules especially in the last election, and strong media campaigns to educate the public on the importance of voting the right candidates.

We can say that there is a good degree of political independence as well, obtaining freedom from a dictator since 1986, the freedom to speak, to write and to protest to the point that some groups even overdo or abuse this freedom. We have also always cited a good degree of economic freedom with better economic fundamentals, growth rates of 7.8%, low interest rate regime, record-level international reserves, strong run-up in the stock market (with recent corrections), followed by recent Investment Grade credit ratings. Go Negosyo Academy in Action: Teaching the Nation How to Fish

Monday, June 10th, 2013

It is back to school and most children are quite excited to go back, but I guess many of them are more eager to see their friends again in school.  In Go Negosyo, there was no summer break for entrepreneurs, as learning did not stop. We continued to share the importance of entrepreneurial education through the conduct of various learning opportunities such as the Negosyo Seminar (Negosem) Basic sessions, Magandang Business Advice (MBA), and our caravans and summits all over the country. These are to impart to our aspiring entrepreneurs the mindset, knowledge and how-to’s in business. Additionally, we continuously air the Go Negosyo sa Radyo in DZRH 666 with Cheska San Diego and Go Negosyo Executive Director Ramon Lopez, and our TV show “SME GO!: Powered by Go Negosyo”, hosted by Betong Sumaya Jr.

Mon Lopez also joined as well in giving advice and mentorship during these seminars. (more…)

Study to Succeed

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

As early as Monday, schools have opened their doors again for another year of learning. Most Filipinos believe that education is the ticket to success, and it is the reason why parents work hard just to send their children to school. We in Go Negosyo believe that education is the greatest equalizer, and in our own small way, we try to empower our micro and small entrepreneurs with proper entrepreneurship education and knowhow to move up in life.  In a way, this helps balance out the reality that not all have the benefit of finishing school, but with knowing the right concepts and mindset, coupled with hardwork and creativity, one can also find success in a good livelihood.

We have come to know many big names like Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Apple’s Steve Jobs, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and many local entrepreneurs who succeeded even without finishing college. They were exceptions, but they would always say that education is still important.  In fact, a study from Duke University finds strong correlation between smart people or those with brainpower and that of success, especially wealth. Let us value education and continuous learning and increase our chances to succeed.

Speaking of education, let me share the story of one entrepreneur who has already caught the attention of the international fashion scene, but has maintained the importance of higher education as a tool for her success. She is the daughter of Rico and Tina Maristela-Ocampo and is currently a student of Parsons School for Design, but she has already founded her own clothing line, which is now exclusively sold at Barneys New York. Read on to know more about this creative young Filipina named Betina Ocampo. (more…)
