On July 26, 2012, officers from Meralco SME Partners, a special team brought together to support small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), including top officers from the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE), the Society of Philippine Electrotechnical Constructors and Suppliers Inc. (SPECS), the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB), and other industry leaders witnessed the inaugural inductionof Accredited Meralco Contractors (AMC) at the Meralco Multipurpose Hall.

The Accredited Meralco Contractors, or AMC, is an accreditation and training program that institutionalizes Meralco’s best-practices among energy service providers, contractors, developers and designers.

Accredited Meralco Contractors can help SMEs:

• Get quicker electricity connection – AMCs alert Meralco of upcoming SME projects months ahead of time which allows preparation of Meralco facilities and equipment so businesses can open on schedule.

• Avoid costly delays – Because of timely information provided by AMCs, Meralco can advise SMEs of the preparations needed to ensure compliance with safety standards before constructing their establishments and even before filling out an application form for Meralco service. This saves SMEs from costly delays and costly rework from failing to meet electrical standards.

• Better plan business expansion – As SMEs grow Meralco and its AMCs will be on hand to assist them in planning and completing their expansion projects.

Contractors who are selected in the AMC program are also provided continuing training from Meralco which include sharing of industry best practices to help accredited contractors achieve their full potential.Prompted by the positive response the AMC program has received from SMEs, a similar program will soon be instituted by Meralco specifically for residential customers.

Ortega, Secretary General, Philippine Retailers Association; Ramon M. Lopez, Go Negosyo Executive Director; Jose Antonio T. Valdez, VP and Head, Marketing and Customer Solutions, Meralco

The evening was filled with music and entertainment provided by The Zion Show of Talentadong Pinoy and Meralco’s Ambassador of Light, Ms. Shamcey Supsup. But it was highlighted by a special ceremony in recognition of the accredited contractors being feted that night.

Emulating the academe practice of capping in graduation rites, the newly inducted accredited Meralco contractors were “capped” by Meralco senior executives with hardhats emblazoned with the Meralco AMC seal. This was not only symbolic of their commitment to excellence in their fields of expertise and of maintaining high service standards, but also of their inclusion in a select group of contractors who bear the power utility’s seal of approval.

To find the right AMC contractor for your business, a complete listing is available at the Meralco website at www.meralco.com/ph/AMC.

The Philippine Dream Team

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

After listening to PNoy’s SONA, where he gave the Filipino people credit for helping him with the reforms he has done, I noticed that the newspaper headlines last Tuesday were basically positive—that the things that we thought as impossible can be done. He thanked his cabinet members for their sacrifice, as many of them can earn much more in the private sector. On one occasion, I asked Greg Domingo, who was the CEO of SM Investment prior to joining the government, how long does he plan to stay, as he is sacrificing a lot of opportunities. While he indeed said he was missing out on a lot of chances, I sensed that his desire to be a part of the dream team is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him to serve the country. I am sure that the other cabinet members feel the same way, as a part of the team that will bring change and see the once “Sick Man of Asia” rise. Being a part of the dream team that will take this country to greater economic heights and achieve investment grade status will definitely be history for all of us. It’s like the Philippines achieving a gold medal in basketball in the Olympics, but this time, the coach is PNoy. (more…)

Flawless Joins Franchise Asia Expo 2012 ‘Beauty is a Flawless Investment’

Friday, July 20th, 2012

The much-awaited Franchise Asia Expo 2012 is slated to open to both franchisors and potential franchisees on July 27, 2012 at the SMX Convention Center, and headlining this year’s list of exhibitors is the country’s leading aesthetic beauty clinic for face, body and medical services, Flawless. With studies saying that franchises have a 90%+ success rate during the first year, it’s no wonder why most Filipinos are looking into franchising as an alternative source of income or as a means to grow their wealth. In fact, according to the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA), the franchise industry has experienced exceptional growth from just fifty franchises in the 1990s to over a thousand today. Recognizing that the business model was both robust and profitable, Flawless realized that there was potential to partner with like-minded entrepreneurs, and opened their doors for franchising in 2008. The company’s standing within the industry was further bolstered in 2009 when Flawless was awarded with Outstanding Retailer of the Year Award by the Philippine Retailers’ Association and this assisted in their recruitment of business savvy franchisees.

“We saw the wealth of opportunities offered by franchising not just for ourselves but more importantly, for our patients as a way of expanding our network and making Flawless the most accessible beauty clinic in the country. This led us to develop a franchising plan, anchored on the ideal of helping others succeed. We want all franchise partners to achieve the same success we have experienced in our company-owned clinics, while upholding the high standards of service excellence that we at Flawless have built our nationwide reputation on.

Flawless has invested greatly in our business model and back-office support functions to deliver the finest service for our franchise partners. From day one, Flawless works closely with our new franchise partner to secure their understanding of our franchising terms, select the best clinic location, deliver our robust training to them and their new employees and provide the essential marketing and sales support required to kick-start any new business, shares Rubby Sy, CEO and owner of Flawless.

lounge

Home to affordable, world-class aesthetic products and services, and front-lined by a roster of A-list celebrity endorsers, Flawless today boasts more than 30 strategically-located branches, all supervised by licensed doctors and medical professionals that are ready and qualified to diagnose almost any skin and body concern.

Why Flawless?

There are various benefits one can get by running a Flawless franchise. A brand that has earned such national recognition and the trust of even the most discerning personalities like Lorna Tolentino and Richard Gutierrez, Flawless’ sales alone show one and all how to attain business success through the brand. The franchisees become part of a strong and successful operation that has been giving quality since 2001 and the momentum of Flawless’ strength benefits all new clinic openings, company owned and franchise alike. In addition, Flawless franchisors see advantages of marketing products and services that are backed by years of scientific studies giving minimal risk of business failure as there is a great deal of support provided by the company itself, including significant marketing, sales and clinic location. From day one, franchisees are shown on how they can manage their own facilities, with guidance from Head Office, for maximum return on investment, prior to opening and once operations are off the ground.

Flawless and Franchise Asia Expo

treatment-area

Still hot from the phenomenal success of last year’s Franchise Asia 2011, PFA is now busy organizing what is said to be the latest evolution of the annual Philippine International Franchise Conference and Exp – Franchise Asia Expo 2012. A three-day event that serves as a non-stop, one-stop, shop for franchise investment opportunities. The exposition, touted as “Asia’s biggest franchise event,” intends to carry on the success of past shows and strengthen the country’s position as “The Center or Franchise Development in Asia.” Joining other homegrown and international companies that open franchise investment opportunities for everyone through this annual event, Flawless showcase their exceptional opportunity at Franchise Asia Expo for the second time.

“We have been conservative with our franchising efforts since we are joined the 2009 Franchise Asia Expo as we have been concentrating on building our extensive company clinic network and nurturing the relationships with our small number of existing franchises. We are now in a stronger position with a fantastic brand and therefore felt compelled to open the opportunity again this year,” says Rubby Sy, CEO.

“Developing robust relationships with our Franchisees is an integral part of our business model. In Franchise Asia Expo 2009, we gained a number of potential partners. In fact, we met couple from Manila who opened their first clinic less than a year later. Since then, the couple has seen the benefit and profitability of working with Flawless and are about to open their 4th clinic
– while looking for yet another! This example is testament to our exceptional commitment to our franchisee partnerships and we are receiving yet more inquiries from other franchisees to increase their Flawless network.”

This year’s expo will occupy the entire 10,000 square meters of exhibit space that all of the four halls of the SMX can provide and will showcase a wide array of franchise investment opportunities that covers all fields including established and successful brands and new and promising franchise concepts from here and abroad – and Flawless intends to stand out from the crowd and be the most beautiful investment opportunity on show.

Distinctive customer experience in the Philippines and its power to drive retail industry growth get the top bill when the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) highlights why shopping is more fun in the Philippines during its 21st National Retail Conference (NRCE) and Stores Asia Expo.

NRCE, the country’s biggest retail industry event, converges its energies with the government’s well-conceived It’s More Fun in the Philippines campaign, as it invites tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez to speak on the campaign’s synergy with retail industry growth and more fun shopping experience. Adding to the prestige of the event is Coca-Cola Bottler Philippines Inc’s President and CEO William Schultz who will be the keynote speaker on the opening day of the conference. Coca-Cola, which celebrates its centennial year this year is among the well-loved brands in the Philippines. Coca-Cola’s participation in this year’s NRCE is expected to further elevate the “fun” aspect of the conference as the brand celebrates “100 Year of Happiness”.

The 21st NRCE is slated on August 9 to 10 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. In the PRA tradition, the NRCE mounts its twin event, the Stores Asia Expo, the country’s premier exhibition of retail suppliers and service providers.

The 2-day conference and exhibit is attended by over 800 retail owners, suppliers, CEOs, and top level executives. Each year, NRCE invites experts from the retail industry and other related sectors to cover relevant aspects of retailing. Chief among the bevy of topics at this year’s NRCE are strategies for driving growth and customer engagement.

Amid the global buzz surrounding initial public offerings (IPO), this year’s plenary sessions will include the use of an IPO as a tool for retail business growth.

Successfully engaging new generation shoppers will be well-covered in this event as other topics as boosting customer experience using store design and licensing opportunities for retailers are presented by field experts.

Coming on the heels of two successful NRCEs which zeroed in on Asian brands, this year’s gathering moves forward with talks on personalized branding and transforming employees into brand ambassadors.
Participants will also gain more insights on the competitive edge of socially responsible businesses and the retailers’ role in advocating a sustainable lifestyle.

There will be two panel discussions each day at NRCE. On the conference’s first day, the morning panel discussion will delve into digital marketing and online commerce. The afternoon panel discussion, on the other hand, is entitled “Global Brands in Local Shores: How Local Brands Can Compete and Succeed vis-à-vis International Brands.”

The roundtable on the conference’s second day will feature luminaries from retail and property development. Entitled “Retail Entertainment: Creating a New Level of Customer Experience,” the morning panel discussion explores how shopping and leisure are intertwined. The conference’s last panel discussion is set to put participants in a hopeful, forward-thinking mood. Entitled “The New Turks of Retailing,” the last panel will feature the young entrepreneurs behind today’s hottest brands and franchises.

The 21st NRCE is proudly presented by PLDT Alpha Enterprise, SM Department Store, Hewlett Packard, Robinsons Malls, Araneta Center, Ayala Malls, Meralco, IBM Philippines, DHL Supply Chain Phils., Inc., Festival Supermall, Wilcon Depot, Celine, The Philippine Star, BusinessWorld, ABS CBN, Schutzen, Mobext, Inc., Crossover 105.1., Entrepreneur, Focalcast, Q Creatives, Cylix Technologies, Mediamagnet, Catalyst Media, Infinite Grafix, Travel Club, APL Logistics, Avolution, Live Media, Starmall and Bayantel.

Giving Back

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

It may sound as a cliché, but I believe that the youth is the hope of every nation. They are the next citizens who will basically run the government, make the economy move, and form part of the society. And it is our responsibility to make sure that the generation that is next to us will continue and improve on what we have started. To do this, we must first teach them that no matter how hard life is, they should believe that positive change can happen and we must not lose hope in the country.

I got a call from Ambassador Joey Cuisia two weeks ago that he will visit me together with ten young Filipino-American leaders, and he would like for me to tell more about my advocacy in Go Negosyo. He has this program called the Filipino American Youth Leadership Program, which is an initiative by him and his wife to encourage the young Fil-Ams to contribute to the Philippines’ further development. Around 400 young people between the ages of 18 to 35 years old submitted their applications, but in the end they only chose 10. It has gained the support of the Consuls General in several states in the United States, as well as local partners that are sponsoring the visit. (more…)

The Wonder of Baler

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

As I was writing this column about our recent Go Negosyo activity in Aurora, I remembered that there was a movie entitled Baler which was shown around four years ago. The plot revolved around a Spanish soldier and a Katipunero’s daughter who fell in love with each other despite the odds. But more than that, the movie also showed how Filipinos in Baler fought the Spaniards through continuous strategic attacks. Their passion and determination to be free from the Spanish rule must have sustained them until they won.

Go Negosyo, in partnership with DTI, started another series of the SME Negosyo Caravan. This year, we did the kick-off in that same town of Baler last July 3. The rains did not stop the participants from coming, as there were more than 500 people who attended the caravan from the expected 300. The Provincial Government of Aurora, led by its governor Bellafor Angara-Castillo who was personally there, as well as Baler Mayor Arthur Angara, helped us make sure that the caravan will start as planned despite the weather. They relayed messages of gratitude to Go Negosyo for partnering with them in this worthwhile project and continued on challenging the attendees to translate their learning to real-life application. During the second day, Paulo Tibig shared to the participants what franchising is all about. He emphasized the right attitude that an aspiring entrepreneur should have in franchising.

According to Mr. Chad Africa, Associate Marketing Manager of Avida Land, the organizers wanted the seamen to be acquainted with the thought that they have partners in growing their business or even in investing every time they come back in the country. He emphasized that in Cavite, there is an outstanding seafaring community and he believed that the said event could really assist seamen in managing their resources.

Because of the success of the first “Pamilyang Seaman Ako!”, Mr. Africa hopes to have more of these in the coming years.
