Meralco launches accredited contractors program to help SMEs

On July 26, 2012, officers from Meralco SME Partners, a special team brought together to support small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), including top officers from the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE), the Society of Philippine Electrotechnical Constructors and Suppliers Inc. (SPECS), the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB), and other industry leaders witnessed the inaugural inductionof Accredited Meralco Contractors (AMC) at the Meralco Multipurpose Hall.

The Accredited Meralco Contractors, or AMC, is an accreditation and training program that institutionalizes Meralco’s best-practices among energy service providers, contractors, developers and designers.

Accredited Meralco Contractors can help SMEs:

• Get quicker electricity connection – AMCs alert Meralco of upcoming SME projects months ahead of time which allows preparation of Meralco facilities and equipment so businesses can open on schedule.

• Avoid costly delays – Because of timely information provided by AMCs, Meralco can advise SMEs of the preparations needed to ensure compliance with safety standards before constructing their establishments and even before filling out an application form for Meralco service. This saves SMEs from costly delays and costly rework from failing to meet electrical standards.

• Better plan business expansion – As SMEs grow Meralco and its AMCs will be on hand to assist them in planning and completing their expansion projects.

Contractors who are selected in the AMC program are also provided continuing training from Meralco which include sharing of industry best practices to help accredited contractors achieve their full potential.Prompted by the positive response the AMC program has received from SMEs, a similar program will soon be instituted by Meralco specifically for residential customers.

The evening was filled with music and entertainment provided by The Zion Show of Talentadong Pinoy and Meralco’s Ambassador of Light, Ms. Shamcey Supsup. But it was highlighted by a special ceremony in recognition of the accredited contractors being feted that night.

Emulating the academe practice of capping in graduation rites, the newly inducted accredited Meralco contractors were “capped” by Meralco senior executives with hardhats emblazoned with the Meralco AMC seal. This was not only symbolic of their commitment to excellence in their fields of expertise and of maintaining high service standards, but also of their inclusion in a select group of contractors who bear the power utility’s seal of approval.

The Philippine Dream Team

After listening to PNoy’s SONA, where he gave the Filipino people credit for helping him with the reforms he has done, I noticed that the newspaper headlines last Tuesday were basically positive—that the things that we thought as impossible can be done. He thanked his cabinet members for their sacrifice, as many of them can earn much more in the private sector. On one occasion, I asked Greg Domingo, who was the CEO of SM Investment prior to joining the government, how long does he plan to stay, as he is sacrificing a lot of opportunities. While he indeed said he was missing out on a lot of chances, I sensed that his desire to be a part of the dream team is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him to serve the country. I am sure that the other cabinet members feel the same way, as a part of the team that will bring change and see the once “Sick Man of Asia” rise. Being a part of the dream team that will take this country to greater economic heights and achieve investment grade status will definitely be history for all of us. It’s like the Philippines achieving a gold medal in basketball in the Olympics, but this time, the coach is PNoy. (more…)

21st NRCE hows why and it is more fun in the Philippines

Distinctive customer experience in the Philippines and its power to drive retail industry growth get the top bill when the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) highlights why shopping is more fun in the Philippines during its 21st National Retail Conference (NRCE) and Stores Asia Expo.

NRCE, the country’s biggest retail industry event, converges its energies with the government’s well-conceived It’s More Fun in the Philippines campaign, as it invites tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez to speak on the campaign’s synergy with retail industry growth and more fun shopping experience. Adding to the prestige of the event is Coca-Cola Bottler Philippines Inc’s President and CEO William Schultz who will be the keynote speaker on the opening day of the conference. Coca-Cola, which celebrates its centennial year this year is among the well-loved brands in the Philippines. Giving Back

It may sound as a cliché, but I believe that the youth is the hope of every nation. They are the next citizens who will basically run the government, make the economy move, and form part of the society. And it is our responsibility to make sure that the generation that is next to us will continue and improve on what we have started. To do this, we must first teach them that no matter how hard life is, they should believe that positive change can happen and we must not lose hope in the country.

I got a call from Ambassador Joey Cuisia two weeks ago that he will visit me together with ten young Filipino-American leaders, and he would like for me to tell more about my advocacy in Go Negosyo. He has this program called the Filipino American Youth Leadership Program, which is an initiative by him and his wife to encourage the young Fil-Ams to contribute to the Philippines’ further development. Around 400 young people between the ages of 18 to 35 years old submitted their applications, but in the end they only chose 10. It has gained the support of the Consuls General in several states in the United States, as well as local partners that are sponsoring the visit. (more…)

2012 MCPI Annual Conference

Clients take centerstage as the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) holds its 2012 Annual Conference on July 26 -27 at the Hyatt Hotel Manila, Philippines.

This annual gathering of microfinance stakeholders representing practitioners (NGOs, banks and cooperatives), funders, government institutions, donors, investors, and other support organizations puts the spotlight on the clients as it carries the theme Focusing on Responsible and Client-Centered Microfinance.

The two-day conference gives an opportunity for all actors in microfinance to discuss how a client-centered approach will play a key role in the future of the sector in the Philippines. Initiatives for client welfare have been put in place as concerns on over-indebtedness, unfair treatment of clients and inappropriate collection mechanisms have surfaced in other countries and caused alarm among stakeholders in the sector.

The Wonder of Baler

As I was writing this column about our recent Go Negosyo activity in Aurora, I remembered that there was a movie entitled Baler which was shown around four years ago. The plot revolved around a Spanish soldier and a Katipunero’s daughter who fell in love with each other despite the odds. But more than that, the movie also showed how Filipinos in Baler fought the Spaniards through continuous strategic attacks. Their passion and determination to be free from the Spanish rule must have sustained them until they won.

Go Negosyo, in partnership with DTI, started another series of the SME Negosyo Caravan. This year, we did the kick-off in that same town of Baler last July 3. The rains did not stop the participants from coming, as there were more than 500 people who attended the caravan from the expected 300. The Provincial Government of Aurora, led by its governor Bellafor Angara-Castillo who was personally there, as well as Baler Mayor Arthur Angara, helped us make sure that the caravan will start as planned despite the weather. Go Negosyo Trains Baler Businessmen, Inspires Aspiring Entrepreneurs in Baler

As part of its commitment to bring entrepreneurship education to Filipinos in different part of the country, the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship – Go Negosyo conducted its SME Negosyo Caravan in Central Luzon’s Baler, Aurora on July 3, 2012 at Baler Sports Complex.

This one-full day entrepreneurship training for both the practicing and aspiring entrepreners was made possible through the tripartite collaboration of Go Negosyo, the Provincial Government of Aurora and the Department of Trade and Industry – Aurora.

The program was formally opened by no less than Mayor Arturo Angara followed by the welcome message of the Assistant Regional Director of DTI – Central Luzon Ms. Judith Angeles. Mayor Angara highlighted the role of the local government unit in promoting an environment suitable for business operations and proceeded on encouraging the people of Baler to have an enterprising mindset, to dream big, to take risks and to be entrepreneurs that will help uplift the economy of the province. Meanwhile, ARD Angeles echoed her words of gratitude for Go Negosyo and encouraged the participants to get the most out of the training. She also reiterated the mandate of DTI to empower and assist entrepreneurs including those who are dreaming to start a business and the startups.


After the welcome messages, Mr. Ramon Lopez, Executive Director of Go Negosyo, discussed what Go Negosyo does as an advocacy and gave a primer on entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurship landscape in the country. ED Lopez’s primer was followed by the keynote message of the highest official of the province, Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo. Gov. Castillo in her speech challenged the participants to be entrepreneurs and mentioned that the provincial government would be very willing to provide the necessary assistance. She called on to the participants to help promote Aurora as a tourist destination.

Gov. Bella’s keynote address was immediately followed by the entrepreneur forum suitably called as ‘Pilipinas, Now is Our Time’ Forum which featured five successful entrepreneurs including Aurora’s very own: Mr. Raul Lara, Owner of Lara Agro and Poultry Supply, Lara’s Farm and three EcoPetrol stations located in Dipaculao, San Luis and Ma. Aurora; and Mr. Jun Madarang, Manager of Aurora Bank. They were joined by Ms. Donna Jiao and husband Mr. Bong Jiao, owners of XC Manufacturing Trading and Enterprise and Binalot President Mr. Rommel Juan.

The forum was followed by the lectures of the Go Negosyo Angelpreneurs and other resource speakers. They were Mr. Paulo Tibig (President, Vcargo) who discussed the topic ‘Magtagumpay: Discovering the Entrepreneurial Character & Tips on Spotting Business Opportunities’; Mr. Carlo Calimon (Executive Director, Let’s Go Foundation) who covered for ‘Produkto at Serbisyong Patok: Basics of Product Development and Strategic Marketing for SMEs’; Mr. Victor Madlangbayan (Social Enterprise Development Manager, Manok Mabuhay) who taught the participants the essentials of business planning; and Mr. Rafael Canare (Executive Director, Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc.) who expounded on franchising as a business model.


The Aurora SME Negosyo Caravan was attended by around 500 participants. Ms. Philippines Earth 2011 Ms. Athena Imperial, who also hails from Aurora, together with Go Negosyo Programs Development Officer, Mr. John Paul Uminga hosted the event. Also present to entertain the participants through intermission numbers were Aurora’s resident singer Mr. Jaylorie delos Reyes and the PGA Band.

Ms. Edna Dizon, Provincial Director of DTI Aurora, and Mr. Guy Tuzon of the Office of the Governor officially closed the program. They relayed messages of gratitude to Go Negosyo for partnering with them in this worthwhile project and continued on challenging the attendees to translate their learning to real-life application. Catch the 2nd Negosyo Sa Barangay Entrepreneurship Development Training

“Kapag Barangay ay kikilos, pag-unlad ng Bayan ay lubos!”

Metro Manila (July 4, 2012) – As part of President Noynoy Aquino’s 16-point agenda which include the development of the Entrepreneurial Pinoy, the Department of Trade and Industry-Philippine Trade Training Center (DTI-PTTC), Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship-Go Negosyo (PCE) and the Center for Future Leadership, Inc. (CFL), in cooperation with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be holding the 2nd Negosyo sa Barangay Entrepreneurship Development Training for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members and officials.

The training aims to inspire, teach and change mindsets to enable our kababayans in the grassroots level to develop and implement their very own entrepreneurship programs right in their own barangays and communities with the goal of empowering them through entrepreneurship.

Hear Go Negosyo Angelpreneurs such as Prof. Reuel Virtucio, Prof. Jorge Wieneke and Dean Francisco “Pax” Lapid share their expertise and experience in establishing successful businesses, listen to motivational speakers like Br. Michael Angelo Lobrin and Mr. Francis Kong and simulate business ideas with the DTI-PTTC Training Team.

The Visayas Cluster training will be held at the Boracay Ecovillage Resort and Convention Center, Malay, Aklan on September 13-16, 2012, while the Mindanao Cluster Training will be held at the Pryce Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, Carmen Hill, Cagayan de Oro City on November 8-11, 2012.

Past Negosyo Sa Barangay Entrepreneurship Development Trainings have been well participated by Local Chief Executives, officials and members of Barangays and SKs, as well as municipal and provincial staff nationwide who have committed in implementing their respective Barangay Entrepreneurship Action Plans.

This training is in accordance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Memorandum Circular No. 2012-41 signed by the Honorable Secretary Jesse M. Robredo.

Avida Land Honors the Filipino Seaman with “Pamilyang Seaman Ako!”

Giving salute to modern day heroes in the spirit of International Seafarers’ Day, Avida Land, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), and Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship – Go Negosyo conducted a two-day event entitled “Pamilyang Seaman Ako!”, at Avida Residences Dasmariñas and Avida Settings Cavite, last June 23 and 24, respectively.

Through informative seminar talks, medical check-ups, different booths, and also live entertainment, “Pamilyang Seaman Ako!” recognized the sacrifices that seamen have for their family and the country, and their valuable contribution to the Philippine economy and international trade.



The highlight of the two-day event which was the series of the seminar talks, was composed of topics discussed by speakers starting with Go Negosyo’s Angelpreneurs Mr. Eduardo “Ardy” O. Roberto, Jr. (Salt & Light Ventures), Ms. Mylene Abiva (Felta Multi-Media Inc.), Mr. Paulo Tibig (V-Cargo), as well as Mr. Joselito “Boojie” Del Prado (BPI), and Ms. Aileen Santos (life coach).

The seminar talks of the first day were started BPI’s Boojie Del Prado, who discussed the importance of financial management and where seamen could invest their hard-earned money. Angelpreneur Ardy Roberto, Jr. talked about discovering the entrepreneurial mindset and spotting business opportunities. Furthermore, Mylene Abiva shared her expertise on product development and marketing basics, while life coach Aileen Santos had a “family talk” and gave some tips in maintaining a happy and exciting relationship despite the distance.

During the second day, Paulo Tibig shared to the participants what franchising is all about. He emphasized the right attitude that an aspiring entrepreneur should have in franchising.


According to Mr. Chad Africa, Associate Marketing Manager of Avida Land, the organizers wanted the seamen to be acquainted with the thought that they have partners in growing their business or even in investing every time they come back in the country. He emphasized that in Cavite, there is an outstanding seafaring community and he believed that the said event could really assist seamen in managing their resources.

Because of the success of the first “Pamilyang Seaman Ako!”, Mr. Africa hopes to have more of these in the coming years.
