A State of Good Governance

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

As I watched PNoy deliver his first State of the Nation Address in Filipino, I said to myself – this person, who was elected by majority of the Filipinos, does possess the quality of being street smart that many people did not expect.

PNoy’s style in delivering his message in our vernacular seems to cater well to the greater population of Filipinos. It has a strong mass-appeal, is easy to understand and practical. While his examples in pointing out the mistakes of the previous administration were relayed in very simple and general terms, it showed how serious he is in fighting corruption, which is a good thing. This is what people really want to see – the assurance that taxes will be well spent.

To See is to Believe

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Last Thursday, we attended the wake of Frank Mayor. He was the father of good friends Joanne Ramirez and Val Sotto.

Joanne was the classmate of my wife in Assumption. She was also editor of our 55 Inspiring Stories of Women Entrepreneurs book. Val is the wife of Ping Sotto who is one of our Angelpreneurs and co-author of our How-to-start your own business book.

As we arrived, Joanne, Val and the rest of their family were talking to guests. I noticed that Deedee Siytangco seemed to be monitoring someone’s arrival, so I told my wife that maybe P-Noy was arriving.

Filipino entrepreneurs can well take advantage of a global readiness for the “Asian brand.”

This is the compelling insight of Mr. Martin Roll, who, together with Jollibee’s Tony Tan Caktiong, will keynote the country’s biggest retail conference, the 19th National Retail Conference and Stores Asia Expo (19th NRCE) on August 11 to 12 at the SMX Convention Center.

The Yellow Revolution

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

The other night, as I was about to write this column, I got word that a storm was headed for Subic. As my family and friends love to dive and visit the many islands in our country, I wanted to get into the tourism business. So, part of my plans was to start building a dive boat, which is now being done in Subic. As I heard the news about the typhoon, I was worried for a direct hit.

The reliable site of typhoon2000.com showed the storm to be bigger than how it was described to me. It seemed to have a very large scope with two centers. So yesterday at 2am, the winds were already blowing so strong. We had to move out of our room for a while for fear that our glass wall might break.
