The Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship—Go Negosyo and US Embassy in Manila held the Luzon Leg of the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Workshop (YEDW) in Batangas last October 7, 8 and 9, 2015.
48 participants from all over Luzon went to the Pontefino Hotel in Batangas City to join the three-day workshop. Several entrepreneurs and guests were invited to speak and inspire the young entrepreneurs with their entrepreneurial journey.
The first day speakers were all Go Negosyo Angelpreneurs: Jorge Wieneke, (co-founder, Potato Corner and President of Tokyo Tempura) talked about re-discovering the entrepreneurial mindset and the secrets of spotting business opportunities; Mylene Abiva, (CEO of FELTA Multimedia) engaged the audience with her presentation on business model development; and Mon Abrea (CSO of Abrea Consulting Group) enlightened the fellows with his expertise on business finance. The latter part of the program was spent on group mentoring sessions. The first day ended with the Fellowship Night where the fellows were able to have fun and get to know each other better.
On the second day, the fellows learned the commerce and culture of the book business through none other than Karina Bolasco, AGM and Publishing Manager of Anvil Publishing, Inc. She was followed by another Go Negosyo Angelpreneur, Vix Madlangbayan, (Manok Mabuhay Inc.) who talked about Business Planning. Jaime Garchitorena (President and CEO of Credit Information Corporation) and Dr. Mario Lamberte (Team Leader for Access to Credit, USAID COMPETE Project) educated the participants with the much-needed information on improving credit availability through credit information and enhancing access to credit and business development services respectively. Jay De Quiros (Project Management Specialist of USAID) discussed the USAID initiatives on improving the investment climate in Philippine cities.
After lunch, two promising entrepreneurs Joel Yala (ChocoVron) and Brian Belen (Ato Belen Farm) shared their entrepreneurial stories in the entrep sharing panel wherein the fellows got to ask questions and seek for pieces of advice. After this, the entrep champ Paulo Tibig (President of VCargo worldwide) shared the strategies of a champion entrepreneur. The day ended with another group mentoring session.
The last day was spent on business pitches. The top 10 from the business idea and existing business category presented their business and plans to the panel of judges Vix Madlangbayan, Glenn Baticados, (Director, Center for Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship, UPLB) and Marcelina Alcantara (DTI Assistant Regional Director, Region IV-A.) The participants also enjoyed hearing the story of Carmen’s Best Ice Cream straight from the man behind the brand, Paco Magsaysay. At the end, the following made the top 5: BUSINESS IDEAS CATEGORY: Joanna Marie Aquino (Sano Food Inc.), Hosfelito Fines (Fino d’ Fine Perfume), Raphaelo Perez (OVERHEAT Burgers), Randy Reyes, Jr. (Freeze Dried Fruits) and Rose Jaminilio (Golden Goat Farm); EXISTING BUSINESS CATEGORY: Erica Midori Acuna (Ako’y Magsasakang Organiko (AMO)), John Paul Vincent (Dotimas Documentaries), Jesus Dane Lavarias (Kaboom Wings and Burgers), Sedfrey Lacsamana (Real Estate Service CPD Seminars) and Diana Prado (Proudly Tarlac Made Inc. (Visit Tarlac)).
Raphaelo Perez won the P10,000 cash grant for the business idea category and Jesus Dane Lavaras won the P30,000 cash grant for existing business category.
